Garden Tower 4

So one of the things I want to do is grow some food.  The desert isn’t a great place to do it, but it’s still possible!  I decided to start simply and get a Garden Tower. It’s also fall, so not a great time to start, but I started anyway :).[pe2-image src=”” href=”″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_20130922_105143_291.jpg” ]

All it took was one Garden Tower, about 8-9 cu yards of potting soil, compost and vermiculite, some red worms and various food plants.  Setting it up was easy: attach the legs, put the compost removal hatch on the bottom, the compost tube cover on the top, fill it with the potting soil, compost and vermiculite.  Put some kitchen scraps and paper in the compost tube in the center and add the red worms to the compost tube (vermicomposting).

It’s all potted now and going strong (so far).  I have one bell pepper on top, some strawberries, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and cucumbers – seedlings that I could get so late in the year. So far they are all doing well except for the cucumbers.  Two of the three cucumber plants died.  The third one appears to be hanging on but barely, time will tell if it will make it.

My long-term plan is to make a kitchen garden along the side of the house.

This picture is from near the kitchen door. So with trellises on the left on the side of the house for climbing plants and raised planters on the right you would be able to walk out the kitchen door, harvest some items and go back in and make your meal.  Plus the house would be cooler (a lot of sun hits that wall) and it would be a nice place to walk along!

Thanks! I plan for it to be. 🙂
Can’t just hope about these things, you have to plan for it!

I wish I planned as well as you are.

Well as soon as I made the offer on the property, I started studying permaculture (well more like got serious about it) and started thinking about what to do. I’ve had several months since I made the offer to start planning these things!
